.

.

.i?eG/E-o/@cJ /./2,/8S:-
/f,.'L

~,

"

BANKFULL FLOW DETERMINATION FOR
OURAY REFUGE, CLEOPATRA'S COUCH, WALTER WALKER AND MAYBELL
PHABSIM SITES

Introduction

All flows affect channel form t~ some degree. The channel-
fDrmfng effectiveness of a given dfscharge is determined by the
magnftude and the frequency of occurrence of the discharge. The
most frequent flows are moderate and transpDrt relatfvely small
amounts of sediment. Infrequent, large discharges transport
large amounts of sediment but it is the Intermedfate sfzed dfs-
charge which transports moderate amounts of sediment and occurs
frequently which forms the channel. Bankfull flow (Pb), the
discharge whIch fills the channel to capacity such that any
additional flow will cause overbank flooding, is a physical
index of the most dominant range of channel-forming flows.

The Objective of this study was to determine the magnitude of
bankfull flows for four PHABSIM sites in the Upper Colorado
River Basin: Walter Walker (Colorado River), Ouray Refuge
(Green River), Cleopatra's Couch and Maybell (Yampa River).
HfstDrical records of the proximate gages to these sftes were
used in this determfnatfon. The gage records were not divfded
as to water resource development hfstDry of the subject river
basin.
