S. ARMY ENGINEERS, MISSOURI RIVER DIVISION

As construction progresses year-by-year under the autho.t'ized Missouri

Basin river control program, the effective operation of completed projects

for multiple-purpose public service becomes increasingly important.

This is particularly significant ,nth- respect to the Missouri River

main stem reservoirs of the Corps of Engineers because of their immense

capacity for storage of water to stop floods and to supply water for many

authorized useful public purposes. This main stem system, as you know, is

now advanced to the point where four major reservoirs are in service, a

fifth is about 70 percent complete, and the sixth is well under construct-

tion.

While the Corps of Engineers, as the design and construction agency on

these projects, has final responsibility by law for their operatirn, it is

our policy to seek the advice ffild reco~nendations of all State and Federal

agencies concerned with the Basin program on the most effective regulatory

program to serve ,the best interests of the entire Basin. This policy has

been consistently followed since the new reservoirs began to come into

operating status in 1954.

This program of careful and coordinated management of the available

-:;'-'..
;;:~1.~:
~~:~~~~ji
f;:!;~~h
,:. _:~.;. .;.~
:::;~_:'_'/C'

water supply through storage has made possible quite good water service

for all authorized functions of the main stem system.
