Parcels boundaries were digitized using UTM Zone 13, NAD27, projection from 5m IRS satellite images. Crop type was determined from evaluation of four sources: 1) supervised classification using three 25m Landsat images, 2) Agro Engineering, Inc. 1998 client database, 3) Rio Grande Water Conservation District (RGWCD) crop database, and 4) limited field verification. Crop type agreed at least 92% with RGWCD crop type. Irrigation type was determined from visual inspection of 5m satellite images. Wellhead location database and water district boundary, county, and HUC spatial coverage's were provided by other RGDSS contractors. RGWCD crop type database was provided by RGWCD. Ditch coverage database was provided by Agro Engineering, Inc.

Three 25m Landsat images covering different sections of the San Luis Valley during various stages of the crop growing season were geo-referenced to UTM Zone 13, NAD27. Training sites for crop and native land cover types were established using the Agro Engineering, Inc. 1998 client database and limited field reconnaissance. The 25m-satellite imagery and training sites were used to perform a maximum likelihood supervised classification to assign a land cover type. Irrigated parcel boundaries were digitized from 5m satellite images. The computerized land cover classification, Agro Engineering's 1998 client database, RGWCD's irrigated agriculture crop database, and limited field verification were used to determine the crop grown within the parcel during 1998. Irrigation type, "sprinkler" or "flood", was determined from visual judgement of the 5m satellite images. GIS coverages provided by other RGDSS contractors were used to assign Water District, HUC, and county descriptions to vectors based on a spatial join of the center of each parcel. RGWCD crop database points were assigned to irrigated parcels using a spatial join. As several points were often located at the same location or within the same parcel, the highest priority crop (1-potatoes / 2-grain / 3-vegetables / 4-alfalfa / 5-meadow grasses) was selected. Well water district ids and permit numbers were assigned using a spatial join with wellhead locations and manipulation of multiple wells into columns. A "na" exists if a wd_id or permit number was not provided for the well. The groundwater available flag was set to "yes" if the irrigation type was sprinkler or a wellhead was located within the boundaries of the parcel. Water district ditch ID was assigned from a spatial union with the ditch service areas. Multiple ditch ids were manipulated into columns indicating overlapping ditch service areas. Parcel area, perimeter, x centroid, and y centroid were calculated using ArcView scripts.
