The original hard copy map was scanned and then digitally cropped by township. These townships were then individually geo-referenced to a PLSS grid provided by the DWR for greater accuracy. Once referenced, individual irrigated areas were cut out and attributed with crop type. Water sources were derived by overlaying ditch service areas in combination with groundwater source algorithm. Wellhead location database and water district boundary, county, and HUC spatial coverage's were provided through the RGDSS.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Digitizing was done using a subtractive method, that is, the non-irrigated areas were removed from the base polygon shapefile. The resulting coverage was then attributed by crop type and acreages were computed. Once this process was completed for all 93 referenced townships, each township went through a QA/QC process to check consistency in the attributing of crop types and referencing. There are some inconsistencies between the 1936 base map and the more recent USGS mapping. In some cases, half townships were not mapped in the 1936 map and these half townships were mapped on the USGS base maps. This situation resulted in a shift in the spatial location of certain irrigated areas, however, this instance does not effect the acreage calculations performed on the irrigated acreage shapefile. In other cases, irrigated areas were mapped as being contiguous with a stream or river in the 1936 base map. When overlaid on the USGS mapping, these irrigated areas may not necessarily fall on the stream. This is most likely due to the stream or river not being correctly mapped in the 1936 map. These differences in base mapping occur mostly along the upper reaches of the tributaries to the valley.
