Climate varies widely throughout the Missouri Basin. Average annual
precipitation varies from 6 inches in the northwestern plains and 20
inches in the mountains, to almost 44 inches in the southeastern part of
the basin. About 2.3 inches of this occurs as runoff, with individual
subbasin averages as high as 6 inches and as low as 0.4 inches. Seasonal
temperatures range from -600 to over 1200, with below zero to over 1000
temperatures experienced over much of the basin.

In 1960 the basi~ was populated by 7.8 million people, consisting
of approximately 20 percent on farms, about 26 percent in the rural
non-farm areas, and ,the remaining 54 percent in urban communities.

K~n~a'

While it is the intention of the Standing Committee to prepare a
framework plan for the entire Missouri Basin they recognize that, for
planning purposes, it was necessary to subdivide the basin into some
logical subbasins. Eight planning basins and the Missouri River were
finally selected. These are:

a. Upper Missouri (which includes all of the drainage
of the Missouri River above the mouth of the Yellowstone)

b. Yellowstone River Subbasin

c. Western Dakota Tributaries (which include all the tribu-,
taries flowing from the west between the mouth of the
Yellowstone and the mouth of the Niobrara Rivers)

6
