The Missouri Basin is favored by having some very fine trout fishing
streams, many of which have national reputations. It also has extensive
areas which are useful for wildlife. Currently, there are about 28 million
fisherman-days being enjoyed in the basin, and it is estimated that this
will increase to over 70 million by 2020. Currently the exiating waters
could supply about 43 million fisherman-days of activity, or the capacity
is somewhat in excess of the total requirement. However, it must be
pointed out that this - while being the case for the basin in total -
is not the case for all of the subbasins. The demand in the Lower
Missouri Subbasin currently exceeds the capacity and it is estimated
that for the lower half of the basin the 2020 demand will exceed the
capacity. Similarly, for hunting in the Missouri Basin, there are
currently about 16 million hunter-days enjoyed and this is about the
overall capacity of the Missouri Basin to furnish hunting. Here again,
the larger or more dense population in t,he lower basin creates hunting
demands in excess of the current capacity, and some excess of capacity
exists in the upper basin. The future requirement for hunting is
estimated to amount to about 42 million hunter-days annually. Approximately
10 percent of the hunting and fishing is by non-residents of the basin.

~

28
