t_, ~, ) . l' ' ~

The difference between precipitation and runoff indicates the portion which
evaporates from ground and water surfaces~ goes into groundwater storage,
and is used by plants and trees. The portion used by the latter in
transpiration, and the evaporation from plant surfaces, the ground and
water surfaces, accounts for the major portio~s of precipitation and makes
possible the agricultural production which is of major importance to the
Missouri Basin.

GROUNDHATER

For the most part, groundwater supplies are used for all purposes
throughout the basin. The follO\.ing map indicates a large aquifer under-
lying Nebraska and parts of Kansas, with rather substantial areas of
aquifers scattered throughout the basin. These provide a good source of
water. There are a fe,,, areas in the basin where extensive use of ground
water has, in recent years, resulted in some lowering of the water table
and there are a few areas where the water table has been rising. The
extensive recent development of ground water as a source of water supply
raises the question of the adequacy in limited localities.

13
