<br />8 <br /> <br /> <br />LAND AVAILABILITY <br /> <br />The land and water resources of the Missouri Basin amount to nearly <br />330 million acres, which is., equivalent to about one-sixth of the conter- <br />minous United States. The topography varies from high mountain peaks in <br />the Rocky Mountains at 14,000 feet msl to about 400 feet msl in the low- <br />land near St. Louis. <br /> <br /> <br />Privately-owned and State and Local Government-managed lands amount <br />to 285 million acres, or about 86 percent; and Federal agency management <br />amounts to 45 million acres, or about 14 percent of the total area. The <br />proportion varies in the individual subbasins with private land ownership <br />being the highest in the Middle Missouri Subbasin, where 99.7 percent of <br />the area is in non-Federal ownership, and the lowest in the Yellowstone <br />Basin, where approximately 64 percent of the land is in this category. <br />Of the 330 million acres of total area, there are approximately 3.4 <br />million acres of water area. <br />
