o
o PREFACE
~
(,Q
W
~ The data on mineral resources and development, the status of
geologic mapping' in the AWR Basins, and the recolDlDendations for pro-
grams of mineral resource investigations and geologic mapping presented
in this section have been sUlDlDarized mostly by the U. S. Bureau of
Mines (chairman agency) and the U. S. Geological Survey ,(vice-chairman
agency) of the Minerals and Geology Work Group. Data, guidance, and
close cooperation throughout the course of the study were furnished by
members of the Work Group representing the states of Arkansas, Colorado,
Kansas" Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Members
of the Work Group, repxesenting the Corps of Engineers, the Department
of Agriculture, the Federal Power CommisSion, and the Department of
Health, Education, and Welfare, reviewed the section at various stages
during the progress of the study and made valuable suggestions for its
improvement.

Most of the material presented in Chapter II, "Mineral
Resources and Development,U was prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines
and the U. S. Geological Survey. The material presented in Chapter III,
"The Plan for Mineral Resources Investigation and Research and Geologic
Mapping," was prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the U. S. Geologi-
cal Survey, and the participating State Geological Survey organizations.

Mineral production figures and reserve estimates for the many
mineral commodities are usually available only on a statewide basis.
The reliability, unifOrmity, and detail of this information is widely
variable. The aggregate knowledge of the melllbers and associates of the
Minerals and Geology Work Group provided the ,basis upon which available
data have been evaluated. These reasonable estimates have been used in
this section of the AWR Report.

Subject to the concurrence and full approval of the several
states concerned, AWRBIAC has accepted the material in this section to
be made a part of ' the AWR Basins Report, and has directed the chairman
'and vice-chairman agencies to reproduce it for inclusion in ,the report.

I
I
,

11
