Data did not indicate
that organic-poor sediments in the downstream river
reach were a source of ammonium or phosphorus to the
small-area flow system. However, laboratory studies
did show that those sediments also had the potential to
remove nitrite plus nitrate by denitrification from
waters entering the small-area flow system in the
downstream river reach. In general. the widespread
distribution of sources and sinIcs of dissolved nitrite
plus nitrate, ammonium, and phosphorus in the small-
area flow system makes it difficult to detennine how
much nitrogen and phosphorus is entering the river
from ground-water discharge.

REFERENCES CITED

Bowles.
