The ar"a is bounded on the nOloth 1)y <br />the North Fork of Fish Creek, !l.S. Highway 40 on the south, the Conein- <br />ental Divide on the east, and the Forese boundary on the west. <br /> <br />Vep,etadon consists of sparce to thick stands vf loogepole pine and <br />Engel~ann Spruce and subalpine fir. Alpine and subalpine grass species <br />occur throughout the area. <br /> <br />There are eight (8) fishing lakes, numerous streams and pond~. T~o <br />major ~t.r~ams drop rapidly toward the west into the Yamna River formir.?: <br />"'oj" shaped \la).leys with waterfalls and cataracts. <br /> <br />Griini to and glacial Inorrain outcropnings occur, especially in the norf:: <br />portion. Large wet meadows are prevalent. Scenic beauty in the area is <br />high, <br /> <br />Water production in the area ranks among the highest producing areas in <br />Colorado. <br /> <br />~ pJrticn of the Steamboat Ski area is within the area. An easement for <br />3. "'/8ter diversion splits the Area from north to south. <br /> <br />Recreation use is relatively heavy due to excellent fishing and prim- <br />itive recreation values. I!ajor activities are fishing, hiking, camping, <br />snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and hunting. The area is known <br />throughout the State for its exceptional snowmobiling and cross-country <br />skiing opportunities. <br /> <br />The RARE Quality Index (QI-2) is 107, however, a 1977 Forest review <br />indicates the index should be 136. A newer Wilderness Quality Deter- <br />mination rating shows the area to have a rating of 6Q on a scale of Q- <br />100. <br /> <br />Public interest in the area being designated fer Wilderness Study is <br />divided. Wilderness and conservation groups recommend the Unit be given <br />special management to emphasize the predominant recreation and scenic <br />values, Two major roact intrusions to Fish Creek Reservoir and the Fish <br />Creek trail head reduce the wilderness quality. <br />
