,

- 18 -

soil and cover cond.itions and will reduce runoff and erosion damage..
Watershed fire control intensification will consist of furnishing a
four-wheel drive fire truck equipped with pump, tank, hoses, and
miscellanous hand tools for use by the Mt. Allison Volunteer Fire
Department.

Improved irrigation water management, in addition to applied
management by landowners, requires the application of these practices:
conservation cropping system, land leveling, land smoothing, irriga-
tion ditches, small irrigation structures, and open drains. Measures
to be applied to the 12 laterals will include use of pre-cast eoncrete
structures, galvanized metal and reinforced concrete pipe, and various
othercast-in-p1ace concrete structures. These measures will reduce
seepage losses as well as erosion and sediment deposition in ditches
and on irrigated fields. Erosion in the canal system is not a serious
problem except below deteriorated check structures and a few canal
sections where the grade is excessive.

The application of the land treatment measures in the watershed
are estimated to provide an improved vegetative, soil, and moisture
condition in the watershed area, and will increase project effici-
encies from 44 to 52 percent on the irrigated lands. These improve-
ments will improve and stabilize the income of the local people and
the surrounding areas.

The Pine River Soil Conservation District and its cooperators
are carrying out an effective and active soil and moisture conserva-
tion program with technical assistance furnished by the Soil
Conservation Service. There are no standard soil surveys with a
publication date set for this watershed. Present technical assist-
ance is adequate to provide needed soil surveys in the watershed.
Of the 114 operating units in the project area, 25 have basic farm
and ranch conservation plans. A continued effort will be placed on
the development of additional basic conservation plans with the
landowners and operators. Table 1A shows the amounts and costs of
land treatment measures previously installed in the project area.

Structural Measures

Structural measures in the plan include: (1) two floodwater-
retarding and sediment detention reservoirs having a combined
capacity of 266 acre-feet, and (2) rehabilitation of the 30 miles of
main canal by means of the replacement and repair of old structures,
