.

..

.t S 1 ')
the emp10)1l!'eWt in Colorado, and 23.1 percent of the unemployment. The
area also had a much higher percentage of its labor force in the public
administration and armed forces category than did the State as a whole.
The major employing industries are trade, service, and manufacturing.
As indicated in table 5, the basin area also has a higher percentage of
its employment in the service and manufacturing industries than does
the State. This fact assumes further significance when it is recogni zed
that the State of Colorado ranked fifth among the States in percentage
gain of value added by manufacture between 1954 and 1958. Value added
by manufacture for 1958 was about $781 million for Colorado and $147 mil-
lion for the study area. Shift analysis of the period, 1940-1960, reveals
that relative to the rest of the United States, new industrial growth has
been predominantly slow-growth activities such as farming and mining.

TABLE 5. -- Labor Force, 19601

Base Stuoy Area Co 1 orado I
Nwnber Percent of Number Percent of i
Industry Group (000 's) Labor Force (ODD's) L"bor Force I
Agriculture, forestry, 7.4 504 43.7 7.2
and fishcries
Hining 3.2 2.4 14.3 2.1
Construction 7.4 5.4 44.2 6.5
~lanufacturc 20.3 14.9 98.9 14.5
Transportation, comrnunica- 8.8 6.5 49.9 7.3
tions and utili ties
Trade 22.8 16.8 127.9 18.8
Finance, insurance, and 4.4 3.2 29.6 4.3
real estate
Services 30,4 22.5 151.7 22.3
Pub I i-c- icilnlilistia-tio-n-a-na- ~ - -22-.3- - --16;4- - - - -68.5- ---10.1._
armed forces
Industry not reported 3.2 2,4 21. 2 3.
