CRAPrER V

ALTERNATIVES STUDIED
(Tomichi Creek Unit)

C":l
""
CO
~

Clearing in the reservoir basin would require removal of aspen and
spruce trees from the north-facing slopes of the basin and trees along
the stream channel. About 75 acres would need to be cleared.

Most of the impervious dam material would come from a site about 3
miles below the dam site. Pervious materials would be obtained from al-
luvial fans within the reservoir basin. Riprap would probably come from
a granite outcrop 4 to 5 miles upstream from the dam site.

Development of the reservoir would require the purchase of 1,060
acres of land, including 170 acres of irrigated land, 570 acres of pri-
vate grazing land, and the withdrawal of 320 acres of public forest land.
The development would necessitate the relocation of 3.4 miles of U.S.
Highway 50, 3.5 miles of telephone lines, and 3 miles of a gas line north
of the reservoir basin.

Crookton Canal

The Crookton C anal would be 7.7 miles long and would divert directly
from the Elko Reservoir outlet works. The canal would have initial and
terminal capacities of 42 and 15 cubic feet per second, respectively.
The canal would include 5.9 miles of open earth-lined sections and 1.8
miles of in-line structures of siphons and culverts. Construction of
the canal would require the purchase of 45 acres of private grazing land
and the withdrawal of 26 acres of public domain.

Drains

A tentative drainage system has been laid out for the Needle Creek
area to maintain a favorable water level on full service lands and to
protect lower lying presently irrigated lands. The system includes 5
miles of deep drains and 1 mile of shallow surface drains. The actual
drainage system could not be finally designed, however, until irrigation
water was applied to the lands and the exact drainage deficiencies became
evident.

Permanent Operating Facilities

The unit would share the operation and maintenance headquarters at
Gunnison with any other units of the project that may be constructed.

Development program

Development of the Tomichi Creek Unit would require 5 years. The
first year would be required for advance planning studies. Elko Dam and
Reservoir would require 6 months of preconstruction investigations and
3~ years for construction, whereas the Crookton Canal would require 15
months for preconstruction investigations and 33 months for construction.

44
