-i
(V)
'"
-I

CRAPI'ER V

ALTERNATIVES STUDIED
(Tomichi Creek Unit)

Elko Dam would be a rolled earthfill strueture with a volume of
l,3l2,600 cubic yards. The dam would rise ll7 feet above streambed and,
at crest elevation 8,377 feet, it would be 30 feet wide and l,200 feet
long. The spillway from the reservoir would be an open chute on the
right abutment of the dam. With the reservoir at maximum water elevation
8,37l.2 feet, the spillway would have a capacity of _l2,lOO cubic feet per
second. The outlet works, in the left abutment, would have a capacity of
240 cubic feet per second with the reservoir at maximum water surface
level. The spillway and outlet works would diseharge into separate stil-
ling basins. Details of the dam design are shown on the following page.

~~.~

An aerial view of Elko Reservoir site with sketch of potential
dam and high water line.

Seepage losses from the reservoir would be negligible. The Precam-
brian granite formation which underlies the area is relatively impervious
and a cutoff trench would prevent seepage through the gravels in the
stream bottom.

42
