Both
sites were dropped from the plan because of adverse geologic conditions
at the potential dam axes.

The Agate site on Tomichi Creek above Sargents was considered as an
alternative to Elko Reservoir of the Tomichi Creek Unit. A reservoir at
the site would be smaller than Elko Reservoir. It would require a feeder
canal from Long Branch Creek and a longer Crookton Canal.

Alternative Canal Alignments

Several different methods of obtaining irrigation water from the
Gunnison River were evaluated. One study included building a new canal
diverting from the river near the community of Almont and serving lands
between the river and Ohio Creek. The high costs of constructing the ca-
nal in the rough terrain made the plan infeasible. To avoid the high ca-
nal costs an electrical pumping plant was investigated to lift water from
the river to a more favorable canal alignment. The high construction
costs and high operation, maintenance, and replacement costs proved to be
beyond the payment capacity of the irrigators.

52
