Subject: Report on Water Resource Development - Joseph City Unit,
Holbrook Project, Arizona

Transmittal

1, The Joseph City area in Arizona has previously been considered
to be a unit of the larger Holbrook Project in basin planning. In an effort
to develop a means of alleviating promptly a reported serious condition
caused by the water problems of the Joseph City Irrigation Company,
investigation of the smaller area was undertaken by the Bureau of Recla-
mation. The irrigation water supply of the Joseph City area, obtained
primarily from the unregulated flow of the Little Colorado River, has
been inadequate in the late spring or early summer months during nearly
all years. Its usual.high content of injurious sediment, and its high con-
centration of sodium are detrimental to both crop growth anq the soil.
The purpose of the present investigations was to find means of relieving
these problems. Inasmuch as the solution to the Joseph City water
supply problem may be obtained by the recovery of groundwater in the
local area, this area may now be considered as a separate development
rather than apart of the larger Holbrook Project. The findings of the
investigations are discussed in this report which is complete herein
without appendixes.

2. This report has been prepared under the authority of the Federal
Reclamation Laws (Act of June 17, 1902, 32 Stat. 338 and Acts amenda-
tory thereof and supplementary thereto).

Cooperation and Acknowledgments

3. Several Federal and nonfederal agencies and many private
individuals cooperated and assisted in furnishing information which was
used in the preparation of this report. The Soil Conservation Service
made available its field surveys, plans, estimates, aerial photographs,
and other information which it had collected in the past several years.
Publications and other helpful information from the Geological Survey
were used freely in the groundwater determinations. At the request of
Region 3 of the Bureau of Reclamation, the Geological Survey conducted
a pump test on newly drilled wells in the project area. The Arizona
