~
CO)
-
....
c
c

JOSEPH CITY UNIT, HOLBROOK PROJECT, ARIZONA

SUMMAR Y SHEET

Location: Near Joseph City, central Navajo County, Arizona, on the
Little Colorado River, 11 miles west of Holbrook, Arizona.

Status Regarding Authorization: The Joseph City Irrigation Company
has undertaken construction and other improvements sub-
stantially in accord with the plan found most feasible in the
Bureau of Reclamation investigations. The pres ent private
project is a going concern which has, commendably, under-
taken the solution of its problems; it is not thought to require
the assistance of the Bureau of Reclamation. This report is
therefore prepared for the record, and not to support a
request for a Bureau of Reclamation project authorization.

PLAN

The most feasible plan involves the continued use of the unregulated
flow of the Little Colorado River and desilting the water before use;
rehabilitating the upper canal by cleaning, and enlarging when neces-
sary; and providing a supplemental supply of groundwater by pumping
from the Coconino sandstone on the north side of the river, The
groundwater supply is particularly valuable as a good quality diluent
of the river water which carries an undesirably large proportion of
sodium salts and large quantities of sediment.

DEFINITE PLAN REPORT

Under the circumstances a Definite Plan Report is not necessary.

COSTS, BENEFITS, ALLOCATIONS, AND REPAYMENT

The subjects under the above heading are not treated for they are not
germane. The Joseph City Irrigation Company has, of its own initi-
ative, undertaken desirable measures to solve the problems of the
project. Bureau cost estimates would be based on somewhat differ-
ent assumptions than controlled the actual construction thus far
attempted by the District and comparisons without making a recon-
ciling study would only lead to confusion and erroneous ideas.

IRRIGA TION

Frost-free Period: 172 days.

Precipitation: 8.83 inches average yearly.

Eleva tion: 5, 000 feet above sea level.
