<br />Engineel's, on preliminal'Y examination of Missouri River from
<br />Kansas City. Kans., to the northern limit of Florence, Nebr., called
<br />for by the river and harbor act approved March 4, 1915.
<br />2. This stretch of the Missouri River, having a len~h of ahout
<br />280 miles, is part of the section between Kansas City and Sioux City.
<br />There is no adopted project for this section, but work has been, car-
<br />ried on at isolated localities from the date of the earliest efforts to
<br />improve the rivet'. The total amount expended on the sUetch under
<br />consideration to March 4, 1915, is about $2.700,000. There is no colU-
<br />merce at present except sand that is dredged fl'om the river and car-
<br />ried to nearby landings, and there appears to be no prospect of any
<br />material eOll1l1lercial de\'elopment in t.he earl,t future. Between
<br />Kansas City and the mouth improvement is in progress under a
<br />project pI'O\-itling for secm'ing R permanent 6-foot channel by regu-
<br />lation and contraction, assisted by the removal of snags, at a total
<br />estimated cost of $20,000,000, or about $50,000 per mile. Commercial
<br />developments on this lowel' portion have not been such as to indicate
<br />the advisability at this time of making any extension of the project
<br />upstream. In the opinion of the distl'lct officer the improvement of
<br />the ri"er between Kansas Citv and Florence is not lldvisable to any
<br />greater extent than the contlnnance of snagging operations, which
<br />are can'ied Oil \lnller existing appropriations.' The division engi-
<br />neer concUl'S in this opinion. . ,
<br />3. This report has heen referred, as required by law, to the Board
<br />of Engineers for Rivel's and HarbOl's, and attention is invited to
<br />its repOlt herewith, dated July 27, 1915, concurring ill the views of,
<br />thc distl'ict officer and the di,'ision engineer.
<br />4. After due consideration of the above-mentioned reports I coll-
<br />cur in the views of the district officer, the division engineer, and the
<br />Board of Engineers for Ri'Vers and Harbors, and therefore report
<br />that the impro\"ement by the United States of Missouri Rivt'r from
<br />.Kansas City, Kans., to the northern limit of Florence, Nebr., is not
<br />deemed advisable at the present time to a greater extent than the
<br />continuance of snagging operations now carried on. '
