.,
)

"

_ using the average of pan evaporation measured at Pueblo and John
~::l______ _._ _._
------- --
N Martin dam, an assumed pan coefficierit-6f-O-:-70-;--and.-an.assumed-~~__
..:;,

~

river width of 150 feet in the 98 river miles of the reach. It

was also assumed that phreatophytes located along the river in the

shallow water table take water directly from the river. and the

amount was estimated by assuming 1.5 acre-feet of evapotranspira-

tion per acre of phreatophytes occurred annually within a distance

of 200 feet on each side of the river. The result of this water

budget was that return flow in this reach of river averages about

6 percent, which is consistent with results of t:he USGS study.

...:

Average equivalent return flow in the simulated operation was com-

puted from table 5 by dividing the average of column 5 by the sum

of the averages of columns 4 and 5 and amounted to about 26 per-

cent. Therefore, results of the water budget confirm that the

rights of water users are adequately protected.

It is possible that an agreement with the Las Animas

Consolidated Canal Company may be made that would ease the adminis-

tration of the proposed transfer. The agreement would allow actual

diversion of the state water at the Las Animas Consolidated Canal

company headgate and measuring it back into the river in the

company's wasteway. The company's canal has plenty of capacity

since the transfer of the Las Animas Ditch Company water to the

Rocky Ford Highline headgate.

13
