00039j

.

Region 1: NORTH AND SOUTH PLATTE DRAINAGE SYSTEMS

.

North Platte - This river receives only moderate boater use in Colorado.

Northgate Canyon, north of Walden, gets the largest part of the use on

this river - 1500 user-days of a total of 1600. Several commercial river

companies and school groups make up a large part of the use on this stretch,

rafts being the predominant boat in the area. See Table 2.

As can be seen on Map 2 on the following page, very little of this

river is within the State of Colorado. Its distance from population centers

is a major influence upon the use on this river, which will probably remain

relatively low in years to come.

The Laramie River, the only boatable tributary of the North Platte

in Colorado, receives slight use, mostly in open canoes.

South Platte - The South Platte drains much of the east slope of the Colorado

Rockies. Its headwaters begin in the mountains above Fairp1ay but boater

use takes place only in the stretches below Eleven-Mile Reservoir, increasing

in the stretch between Deckers and the town of South Platte, where the

river joins the North Fork.

The North Fork receives moderate use at this time--most1y from Foxton

to the confluence. Use on this stretch, and on the Upper South Platte

(South Fork), is mostly kayaking and canoeing, though there is a very large

use of innertubes near Deckers (innertubes are not included as boats in

this report). Boating is possible from May through September but most use

occurs between June and August.

.

-14-
