Used mainly for construction purposes, sand and gravel <br />serves as an aggregate for concrete, asphalt, mortar, and as road fill. <br />Uranium deposits in the Basin are generally small. A considerable amount <br />of exploration was done in the middle 1950's northeast of Meeker in an <br />area known as Uranium Peak. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Rio Blanco County has not been a large producer of coal. However, <br />increasing demand for electrical energy in the Western States will <br />require increasing amounts of coal as fuel for generating plants. <br />The two major coal fields are Danforth Hills north of Meeker and the <br />lower White River near Rangely. The field in the lower White River <br />is in the Williams Fork Formation of the Mesa Verde Group and available <br />data indicate the presence of large resources of high-volatile bituminous <br />coal. A coal-fired steam generating power plant is tentatively planned <br />near Rangely. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Many authorities agree that domestic petroleum supplies will have to <br />be supplemented with shale oil in order to meet increasing national <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />- 11 - <br /> <br />
