We purchased the line, emittors
and pipe to equip two and one-flalf acres of new apple planting at the
experiment station.

This project is outstanding because it will show how to grow three
thousand bushel of apples to the acre. With this kind of :?roduction a ten
acre farm could become an economical unit to operate. 10 acres x 3,000
bushel @ $6.00/bushel = $180,000. Since many of the farms in this area are
too small to be economical the land and water don't get the right kind of
attention. If these small units can be made profitable, many small land
holders will begin to give the land and water the kind of attention that is
needed to change the course of salinity.

The water being used on this plot comes from a sump plmp that was
installed many years ago to keep the basement dry. The quality of the
water is very poor for it ranges from 100 p.p.m. in the spring to 4000 p.p.m.
in the fall. The trees however are doing exceptionally well and the salty
water seems to have had no effect on their growth.

- 18 -
