The
whole 60 Acre farm irrigation system has been rejuvenated by the installation
of new concrete head ditches and a pump back system.

Earlier reports have outlined the construction but a more detailed
description of our work at this time may help farmers who are looking for
an easy operating irrigation system.

Consideration is given to the normal operating volume of water which
is delivered to the farm. In this case it was from one to three second
feet. An upper limit of the furrow volume in the soil is considered
about 12 gallons per minute. Therefore, if we take one second foot
(450 gal./min. and divide it by 12 we have about 37 ports in each set.
General practice is to divide the field into an even number of sets
having anywhere from 36 to 40 ports per set.

There are two basic methods of building these ditches with level
ports. One is to put the ditch itself on the level with drop structures
in between the level sections as seen below.

''._->-,~~~
" 'e,4
, .'1
~"
"

,
,:~~{~';.' '.,p',
,t:,,;',.':' -
..~
~-" ' ,..
. -'~::}~>

The other method is to make the ditch deep enough to hold the maximum
capacity below the outlets and put the ditch on a grade to fit the terrain.
Having used both methods at the Thompson Farm we would recommend the
latter where it is possible.

- IS -
