,

of 20,100 cfs on June 4.

In order to alleviate flooding at Jensen, the bypass releases
from Flaming Gorge were curtailed before the high Yampa River
flows reached Jensen. The bypass was turned off in the early
evening on Friday May 30. A new peak was recorded on the Green
River at Jensen on Thursday June 5 with a flow of 25,000 cfs.
This broke last years peak of 22,300 cfs and is the highest flow
seen at Jensen since 1984. Flows on the Yampa River are now
gradually decreasing as are flows on the Green River at Jensen.

The June 1 inflow forecast for Flaming Gorge is for 1.65 million
acre-feet of inflow into Flaming Gorge during the April though
July time period. This is a moderate reduction from the May 1
forecast but is consistent will mid May forecast which was
considered at the time the bypass releases were intiated. In the
month of June alone, inflow is expected to be 675 thousand
acre-feet. Daily average inflow into Flaming Gorge is now in
excess of 10,000 cfs.

It is possible that bypass releases will be started once again
this month (June 1997). Hydrologic conditions in the Upper Green
River Basin will closely monitored and a movement toward a wet
cycle may require that additional bypass releases be needed. So
far, since the issuance of the June 1 forecast, the climate
conditions in the Upper Green River Basin have been wet. From
Friday June through Tuesday June 10, most climate stations in the
Upper Green River Basin recorded over 3/4 inch of rain. More
precipitation is forecasted in the Upper Green River Basin over
the next few days as well.

Regardless of whether additional bypass releases are scheduled,
releases will not be reduced below maximum power plant capacity
(4600 cfs) until sometime in July. The reservoir will be very
nearly full by the end of July.

Open forum discussions on Flaming Gorge operations have been
taking place at meetings of the "Flaming Gorge Working Group".
The next Working Group meeting is scheduled for August 7 at 10 am
in Heber, Ut. For more information on the Working Group, contact
Ed Vidmar at 801-379-1000.

ASPINALL - May unregulated inflow into Blue Mesa was 340,000
acre-feet or about 153 percent of average. The annual snowmelt
runoff for June is in full swing resulting in high reservoir
inflows. Blue Mesa Reservoir daily inflows have been averaging
about 9,500 for June 5-9. The reservoir's present storage is
682,000 acre-feet which corresponds to a water surface elevation
of 7502.5 feet. The reservoir water surface elevation is raising
about 1-2 feet per day depending on weather conditions.

Releases from Crysta~Dam are currently at 4,000 cfs and the
Gunnison Diversion Tunnel is presently taking about 600 cfs from
the river leaving approximately 3,400 cfs in the Black Canyon of
the Gunnison. The 4,000 cfs release is the maximum control
release capable at the dam, anything above this level would be
from additional flows from the overflow spillway.
