The Colorado Water Conservation Board, State Engineer's Office, and High
Plains Conservancy Districts recognize the need for more refined data to
evalllate the ground-water resources of the High Plains, These St"te
agencies are attempting to manage the ground-water supply, but they need
a basis for predicting and then evaluating the effects of proposed changes
in ground-water use.

The Water Resources Division of the V,S, Geological Survey is currently
making reconnaissance studies in the High Plains to monitor the effects
of ground-water withdrawal on depletion of storage in the Ogallala, In
order to provide factual hydrologic data needed to manage the ground-water
supply, this program should be expanded and will include the following:

1. Inventory, measurement of discharge, and determination
of the annual withdrawal of irrigation wells.

2. Yearly measurements of observation wells to determine
the effect of grouTlu-water withurawaJ. on aquifer stof<=!ge.
