<br />Streamflow was n the normal range or abOve that range at 58 percent 01 the index statIOns in the United
<br />Slates and southern Canada but Pennsylvania. New Jersey, and New York City declared drought emergencies
<br />affecting 2 t miRion people. Delaware RIVer basin streamflows and reservoir contents were at record Apr. lows:
<br />below-normal flows spread northward mto New York, northern New England, New Brunswick, and Quebec and
<br />southward oto parts of Rorida. Alabama and louisiana, because 01 below-average Apn precipitation in much 01
<br />the area east of the MiSSiSSippi River and south of the Great lakes. Record low ttows for April occurred at 15
<br />sites in thIS area of below-normal streamflow. and 19 of 33 selected reservor-s in the area had contents that
<br />were we. below Apii averages.

<br />In sharp contrast, ttle area of above-normal streamflow centered around Utah has been a persistent feature
<br />lor many months and the Great Salt lake rose 0.35 foot to 4209.90 feet above mean sea level, the highest
<br />elevation ., over one hundred years and only 0.35 foot below the predICted 1985 high.

<br />Snowmelt Roods occurred on April 20-22 in Michigan's Upper Pennsula with recurrence nlervals equaling
<br />or exceeding 100 years at 7 SItes in the sparsely populated area_
