Develooment of the Yuma Main Canal
Water Loss Distribution Sheet

The Yuma Main Canal Water Loss Distribution Sheet (WLDSl calculates the nuaber
o
CO> of acre-feet diverted by users on the Yuma Main Canal at Siphon Drop (see
c:) sample WLDS following). These calculations generate the share of the total
o
-J canal seepage loss (A.F. Loss) to be attributed to each user at its delivery
iol:lo point(s). then add each of these loss shares to the corresponding delivery for
each user (A.F. Diverted) to arrive at the water actually diverted by the user
at Siphon Drop (A.F. Diverted at Siphon Drop). Diversions calculated here for
Siphon Drop then become deliveries at Siphon Drop for these users and are. in
a similar manner on the All-American Canal WLDS. recalculated with other
deliveries to arrive a~ ~he diversion to be charged each user at its legal
point of diversion near Imperial Dam.

Unless noted otherwise, a WLDS for monthly accounting uses United States
Geological Survey (USGS) provisional listings or data furnished by Yuma
Projects Office (YPOl on a monthly FAX report. A WLDS for a yearly
accounting, unless otherwise specified, uses USGS final listings for the year
or data used by YPO in its yearly hydrographic tabulations. The sample WLDS
was done on Lotus 1-2-3, and has been maintained in the historical format for
continuity.

The sample sheet has 31 numbered lines for reference with the following:

Line 1 - From left to right. the next to last column has the entry for the
total flow diverted at Siphon Drop in cfs; the rightmost column shows this
value in acre-feet. Flow values may be obtained from the USGS provisional and
yearly listings. and are currently included on a monthly FAX report from YPO.

Line 2 - This line gives the water spilled at California Wasteway (officially
named Yuma Main Canal Wasteway - see Line 27l. It is parenthetically shown
as a scheduled flow. indicating that it is water scheduled to be returned to
the river for an operational purpose and is not. as shown on Line 3. excess or
was1:e.

Prior to 1988. discharges below 100 cfs at the Yuma Main Canal Wasteway were
generally computed by the USGS from a stage-discharge relation. flows above
100 cfs were generally computed as the difference between the discharge of
Yuma Main Canal at Siphon Drop and Yuma Main Canal below the Colorado River
siphon. with deductions for deliveries made along the canal. Because flows
since 1988 have been almost exclusively higher than 100 cfs. the USGS has used

4
