.

'l,

"

.

'.'

".

r)"'!'C:-, -,
~" ",....1

staying in one place, and that they .,ere preoccllpied \.ith hunting.

In prehistoric times this area along the eastern slope of

the ,"ocky :.[ountains and extending out to the High Hains held a rela-

tively large Indian population, although nDt so large probably as in

the areas further east, closer to the _ississippi drainage. There are

village sites in and areund the reservoir areas which contain pottery,

principally of the t lains ..oodland variety. This "ould indicate that

their occupation goes back to perhaps 1000 A.U. ~ottery on these sites

is rarely abundant but should. be a.nple to date these sites in a general

way and to indicate the cultural affiliatiDns of the peotple. In the

sl"uthern part of the state around the areas of the I'ueble and ben Lutler

reservoirs (Gunnison-Arkansas .roject) are sites which contain lecal

Plains pottery and intrusive seuthwestern pottery, probably from New

:'iex1co. This latter material has been dated accurately in its native

area by the tree ring method and should i'rovide an invaluable clue to

the dating of the local material in the "estern ilains region for this

period. In the survey particular attention will be given to these sites.

What seems to be an eve]; earlier occupatiDn in this area is

represented by sitee near the Graneros and .'ueblo .1eservoirs on the

Arkansas drainage. 'i'hese occur chiefly in caves or small rock shelters

along the small streams ',Ihich break out of the mountains and have cut

deep canyons through the extreme western limit of the jJlains. 'l'hese
sites are difficult to survey because of the great amount of scaling

whiCh has taken place Dn the cave roofs, resulting in a considerable

deposit Df jwnbled sandstone on the cave flDors. Some organic material

has been recovered from these sites. This includes fra~ents of

sandals, twined rope, yucca "cuds" and charred corn.
