2214
..

'J

..

.

".

'"

..

Curecanti Heservoir site (for,Clcrl~- kno.in as Cilnarron) in the speC-

tacular Elack Canyon of the Gunnison, lies partially in Gunnison and

partially in Montrose Counties, Colorado. The dam site is a short dis-

tance below the village of Cimarron, which is about 20 miles east of

Hontrose, Colorado, on U. S. highway 50. The proposed dam will be about

600 feet high and Will be located in the narrow canyon downstream from

the mouth of the Cimarron River. The arm of the reservoir formed along

the Gunnison River will be confined within the narrow rugged canyon for

its entire length of approximately 11 miles. The proposed Blue Mesa

dam and reservoir is located at the upper end of this arm and the normal

water levels of the two reservoirs are to be at the. same elevation of

7,335 feet. The Cimarron River, except for a short distance above its

mouth, traverses rather open and rolling country so t hat the arm of the

reservoir for1lU3d along this stream will Widen to more than a mile at

its widest point and Will be approximately 6 miles l~ng.

Replacement and pcwer are the purposE:ll for Which this

reservoir is intended. The proposed water surface elevation with cor-

responding capacities and area acres of the various pools as plann~d for

the operation of the reservoir are shown on the accompanying operations

chart. Had the reservoir been in operation during the l'eriod 1930-1941,

considerable variation of the water surface elevation ':lOuld have occurred

from year to year J and during the months of July, hugust and September

of each year, considerable drawdown would have occurre~

A portion or U. S. highway 50 will be inundated by the

reservoir and it will require relocating,

30
