It is proposed to enlarge the

existing Taylor i.ark l(eservoir which was completed by the Bureau of

Reclamation in 1937 in order to provide additional water for the Un-

compahgre Reclamation ~roject. This site is apJ.lroximately 33 miles

northeast of Gunnison and is reached by wa;,' of State highways 135 and

306. A portion of higrr.Jay 306 which follows the southern and eastern

shores of the existing reservoir from the dam to the Taylor River will

be inundated by the proposed enlargement. It is reported that the ex-

isting reservoir when full will be the largest body of water (approxi-

mately 2,000 acres) in the mountains of Colorado. ihe dam will be 10-

cated just below the existing dam and will raise the water surface ele-

vation from 9,330 feet (top O.L. ,;resent reservoir) to 9,500 feet (pro-

posed normal water surface).

The purposes of this reservoir are (1) the storing of
additional water brought in from waroon and Castle Creeks and (2)

additional regulation of water in the Gunnison River.

The proposed water surface elevati~n with corresponding

capacities in acre feet and area in acres of the pool formed at normal

water level is shown on the accompanying operations chart. Had the

reservoir been in operation during the period 1930-1941, a study of

the proposed operation reveals that, although the water surface ele-

vation in general, rose slightly during July, it rerrained fairly con-

stant during August and September. There was considerable variation

of the water level from year to year. Of the 12 years studied there

were six years when the water level would have been of value for water

2B
