INTRODUCTION

The Twin Lakes and Sugarloaf Reservoir sites are the two

most nDrtherly sites of the Gunnison-Arkansas Project. The field

investigation of these two sites was carried out in conjunction with

the Pando and Ruedi sites of the Blue-South Platte troject during the
week of September 22, 1947. The four sites are related to each other

insofar as recreation planning is concerned. However, the Pando and

Ruedi sites are covered in the Reconnaissance Report for the Blue-

South Platte Project.

II. SUi'i!:ARY of FINDINGS. CONCLUSIGNS and RECOiiMENDATIONS

A. Findinr.s and Conclusions

1. These sites lie within a region of Dutstanding

mountain scenery where excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation

exist.

2. Both sites lie partially within the boundaries of the

San Isabel National Forest. Lands in Public Domain Wlder the admin-

istration of the Bureau of Land Management are within or closely re-

lated to the sites.

3. The following is a preliminary statement on hist-

orical values in the Twin Lakes and Sugarloaf Reservoirs, contrib-

uted by Dr. Herbert O. Brayer, Colorado State Archivist:

"'l\'iin Lakes Reservoir

. . .

will cover one of the

most important pistorical sites in the area, as Twin Lakes has served

as both camp site, recreational facility and refuge for every civi-

lization from the prehistoric to our present day industrial culture.

11
