Delivery of C-BT water to a110ttees in Water

District No. 1 is very difficult because of extremely high "car-

riage losses" in the South Platte River.

The principal office of the NCWCD is in Loveland, Colorado.

The Secretary-Manager is J. R. "Bob" Barkley.

a. C-BT Allotments in Water District No. 1

The three C-BT allotment contracts presently in Water District

No. 1 consist of (1) a small 156 "unit" Class D allotment to a
farmer located under the Bijol! system, (2) a 6,000 "unit" a110t-

ment to the Riverside Irrigati.on District, and (3) a 1,000 "unit"

allotment to the Bijou Irrigation Company. A "unit" is approxi-

mate1y one acre-foot of water per year, but varies with annual

water availability.

(1) 'In the 1940's, the NCWCD made 26 Class D allotments

,

totalling 1,994 units to individual farmers irrigating under the
Bijou system, near Fort Morgan. Due to the extreme difficulty of
making deliveries of C-BT water so far down the river, only rarely
was water ever delivered to these Class D allottees. River tran-

.

sit losses ran from a low of 30 percent to as high as 80 percent,

from the point of delivery at the mouth of Big Thompson Canyon to

.

the Bijol! headgate a few miles downstream from Hardin. As a result

these individual Class D allotments were often leased on a seasonal

basis to farmers upstream in the Loveland-Greeley area.
