Legislation passed i~ 1949 <br />reduced the project's boundilfies to the present area because the ft'lllaining arable hmd <br />could be served better through the facilities of the Yuma Mesa Division of tile Gila Project. <br />However, 3pproximately 101 acres of adjacent Warren Act lands 3re served through f3cilitics <br />of the YUlll3 Auxiliury Project. Colorado River water for the project is diverterl at Imperi31 <br />D3m through the Gila Project Caml system. There were 39,800 3ere-feet of water diverted <br />for irrigation in 1974. There arc no drainage fJcilities on the projL'ct i.llld no recon.led <br />rei urn nows. <br />A.3.c. Gil3 Project <br />This project's 112.500 acres of irrigable valley and Mesa la~ds arc located alo'1g <br />the Colorado and GiiJ Rivers in southwestern Arizona. The project authorization limits <br />diversions frolll the Colorado River for beneficial consumptive use to not more than <br />nOO,OOO acre-feel annually, wilh Ihe quanlity divided equally belween the Wellton-Mohawk <br />and Yuma Mesa Divisions. The Well ton-Mohawk Division's 75,000 acres of irrigahle lands <br />extend 310ng the Gilu River 3nd on bordl'ring Mesa areas. The Yuma Mesa Division cont3ins <br />37,500 "cres of irrigable land, 20,400 of which are in the Mes3 Unit. The North 3nd <br />South Gila V311ey Units combined contain 17,100 3eres. <br />Project water is diverted into the Gila Gravity Main C3ml at Imperial Dam. <br />TIlt' canal extends 21 miles southeast from the Dam to the Yuma Mesa Pumping P13'll, <br />where water is lifted 52 feet to the head of the Mesa distribution system. The Mesa Unit <br />I13S two main c3n31s with 3 total length of 23 miles. plus 43 miles of laterals. There <br />were 235,600 acre-feet of water diverted for irrigation in 1974. There ure no drainage <br />facilities on the unit and no recorded return tlows. <br />The North Gila Valley Unit receives its water from the GilJ Gravity Main Canal <br />and from two turnouts. 7 and II miles below Imperial Dam. This unit contains 25 miles <br />of canals 3nd ,"terals. There were 59,300 aere-feet of water diverteo for irrigation in 1974. <br />Drainage for the unit is provided hy open dmins and the adjacent Colorado and Gilu <br />Rivers. There were 7,900 3cre-feet of return flows recorded that year. <br />Tile South Gila Valley Unit diverts water from the Gila Grnvity Main Canal into <br />six laterals, and just upstrc3m from the Yuma Mesa Pumping Plnnt into the 7.5-mile South <br />Gila Cnnal. The unit has 27 miles of unoerground pipe laterals. There were 56,200 3ere-feet <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />13 <br />
