There are also extensive areas

in. the Missouri River, Western Gulf, Great Basin and South Pacific

watersheds where projected water needs for 1980 will not be met

unless population and use trends are altered or means are found to

increase the available supplies.

:;'~.~"''''
::'~;
,-
." '-

The geographical distributions of the Nation's population ,and its
water resources are poorly related and appear to be growing more
so. Population figures in the.United States show a continuing migra-
tion to major metropolitan areas and to the western states. These
population trends add to the demands on already short water supplies
in a number of areas. Phoenix, Arizona, is one example of a City
located in an area of severely limited water supply that is experi-
encing a growth rate among the highest in the Nation.

But the West is not the only troubled area. Most areas of the United
States have either chronic, frequent, or occasional water supply
problems,

-.--'.", '. ......
:{.~~:~:?~}~~:t~.

~:!f0!:f~~~_~_~~~~~I~~~~

1

-:''c::;' . --~- :;,-...-
. ."-..
.":-~;=:-;..:':;~"_.:::~ ~_.

:i'~;f;;~:'(~~;
