The water exchange concepts advanced in the

1947 report have been retained in this reevaluation.

Project Operations

The full operation of project facilities would mWte possible the

conveyance and direct delivery of Colorado River water into the central

portion of the Gila River Basin. The companion storage features in the

basin would provide desired regulation of existing local water supplies

and make possible optimum water utilization in the higher elevations of

Arizona and New Mexico; provide a power supply for project ptunping and

for commercial sale; and, in addition, accomplish the other multi-

purpose benefits from flood control, fish and wildlife, recreation,

and sediment control. Close coordination will be required with the

other agencies planning reservoir developments in these upper areas to

achieve maximum benefits. Specific areas eligible under Area

Redevelopment Act provisions would also be aided.

Existing and potential water-using agencies in the area have expressed

a desire to contract for water service.
