I

I

have to be upgraded or additional reject stream replacement water
would be required during periods of YDP shut down. Reject
stream requirements are estimated to be 38,400 acre-feet but
could be considerably greater.

I

I

Advantages:
-Reduces power costs, less frequent interruptions than Plan A-2,
but probably of longer duration.
-This plan could meet the Minute more of the time than A-2.

I

Disadvantages:
-Emergency power must be upgraded to minimi~e the length of time
it would take to bring the YDP back on-line. The length of
interruption will affect the time required to get back on-line.
-The power supply could be discontinued with little notice.
Interruptions are most likely to occur during peak power
periods which may coincide with river salinity measurements.
.This plan could require increasing brine stream replacement
water or not reducing Arizona's full return flow credit.

I

I

I

plan A-4.
Cost $20.2

Ooerate the YDP with Off-Peak. Non-Firm
million, TVS 1008 points, Category I.

Power.

I

This plan i3 a combination of Plans A-2 and A-3 and offers the
potential for saving additional power costs. The plan assumes
the YDP operates as in Plan A-I, except desalting equipment uses
offpeak, non-firm power. The plan assumes planned shut downs of
6 hours combined duration per day. The plan assumes further
saving of power rates could be negotiated over the lower rates of
Plans A-2 or A-3. Reject stream requirements would be 56,600
acre-feet per year.

I

I

Advantages:
.Saves 70 to 80 percent of power during peak hours.
power costs more than Plans A-2 and A-3 alone.

I

Reduces

I

Disadvantages:
.Same as in A-2 and A-3 combined.
during peak hours could be more
peak power interruption.

Non-firm power interruptions
significant than strictly a

I

Plan A-5.
Cost $25.8

Install State-Of-The-Art
million, TVS 1056 points,

Low-Pressure
Category I.

Membranes.

I

The YDP would utilize newly developed, low pressure thin-film
composite membranes installed in place of the high-pressure
membranes now designed for the plant. These membranes would
reduce desalting equipment power demand by about 40 percent and
thereby reduce total YDP power demand by about 20 percent. The
new membranes would require testing. Modification to the

I

I

15

I

I
