c

.

2

.

G\) INTRODUCTION

Li')
-
C
C

Following preliminary background research during June and July, 1979, a

geological and paleontological field study of the entire area to be af~

fected by the Juniper - Cross Mountain Project was conducted during August

by Dr. K. Lee Shropshire, Professor of Geol09Y, University of Northern

Colorado.

The purposes of the study were; (1) to gather information concerning the

general geological and paleontological environment of the proposed dam

and reservoir sites; (2) to determine whether or not significant fossils

and/or unique geological resources are present or indicated in the area;

(3) to assess potential impact of the project on the significant geological

and paleontological resources; and (4) to develop plans for mitigation

(where possible) of this impact on these resources.

Several particular localities, identified from the background research as

potentially significant, were examined carefully and in great detail;

while the rest of the area to be impacted by the project - mainly the
Yampa River floodplain - was surveyed by reconnaissance techniques and

"spot checked" wherever there appeared to be any possibil ity of occurrence

of important geological or paleontological features. Also, several long-

time local residents (mainly ranchers who live in the area) and rockhounds

were contacted to ascertain whether or not they knew of the present exis-
tence or past discovery of any important fossils or unusual geological
features.

. .....-;--...-
