Thus. the Juniper Hot Springs consti-

tute a rather unusual geological resource. Originally, the hot water, which

moves upward through a fault zone probably from fairly deep in the earth,

em1nated at three or four small springs on the south bank of the Vampa River.

The present bathhouse was built over the springs several decades ago, thus

commerc1alizing the phenomenon. The water issues forth slowly (low flow

rate) at a temperature of about 1050 F, and is said to be "good for healing

and removing toxic poisons from the body" (Stella Craig, owner, personal

communication). Although the present facilities are rather run down, the

hot springs have potential both as a commercial venture and as a site of

g.ologica' interest. Furthermore, they may be an indication that volcanic

and/or tectonic activity are just dormant (rather than totally defunct) in

the area. '

8. Fossils -- Of the fossils discussed on pages 10 - 14, the follow-
ing have either present or potential significance, for the reasons discussed
on those previous pages;
a. Possible trace fossils from the Precambrian Uinta Mountain

Group s ha' es .
,b. Ordovician fish remains from the lower Madison Limestone.

c. Marine invertebrate fossils from the Pennsylvanian Morgan

,Formation - significant for their great abundance and excellent state of

preservation, not because they are unusual.

d.Petrified wood in the Triassic Chinle Formation.

e. 'Dinosaur bones from the Jurassic Morrison Formation _

potentially important, if they woul d be di scovered duri ng constructi on

of project facilities.

.. ........-...,
