extent vitiated the records kept at Yuma by the Geological

Survey for the first few years.

After the i'assage of t:1e Reclamation Act in 1902 the

Reclamution Service took up tne systematic study of the

lower river, provided for mere frequent and systematic

gagings at Yu~ and other points, and made a topographic

survey of the lOh~r valleys of the Colorado River from
Eull's Head to the Mexican bou.~dary. Tae investigations

were continued, particularly as regards stream measurements

and the survey of reservoir sites and borings at the nccessary

A more intensive study of the entire basin was inaugu-

rated in 1914 by a specie.l e,llotm:mt of $50,000 for this

purpose, supplemented by l~nual allotments in subsequent years,

and this ;~rk was finally assembled in three large volumes of

manuscript by Itt. John T. ~fuistler. It includpd a reconnais-

sanee of practically all of the proposed reservoir sites and
