The state of California is cooperating to the extent of $300,000 a year
in a plan to oomplete the mapping of the entire Sta-te and to keep existing
maps up-to-date. 'Ihisis the major' project, and it covers the entire state.
The only substantial areas remaining unmapped at the mile-to-the-inch or
larger sca:ie and not yet authorized for mapping are in the Alturas and
Mono ,Lake sections.

In conne6tion with the over-all completion effort there are numerous
specific projects, several of which should be mentioned.

Mapping in the San, .Joaquin Valley south of Mendota for studies of the
Inter-Agency Committee on land subsidence haS progressed to a point where
COlor-separation has been completed, and most of the quadrangles are now
ready for printing.

The revision of :rour San Francisco m~ps is well underway. The 1'110 tos '
were flown in september and the off;tce, revision-was completed in pecember.

Basic control operations ,were. completed this summer for 23 quadrangles
in the Sierras us5.ng helicopter transportation. A considerable number of
engineering, matiliours, \o!8re saved by \;1 sing this tyPe aircraft. 'As in, the
GrandCan;von projecti'additiona,l supplemental vertical ,control for these
quadrangles, will be obtained in the office using oblique aerial photos
and the photoalidade instrument. These quadrangles are not included in the
