SUn., Sept. 18, 1994 <br /> <br />Las Vegas. )i'- <br />eyes CoIO.l"'~ <br />for water <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Officials call Roan Creek <br />Reservoir a short-term <br />source for booming city <br /> <br />Associated Press <br /> <br />DE BEQUE - Nevada water <br />officials, under pressure to find <br />additional water sources for the <br />booming Las Vegas, Nev., area, <br />have toured the proposed Roan <br />Creek Reservoir site to examine <br />one possible source. <br />Chevron Oil is proposing leasing <br />up to 175,000 acre-feet of water a <br />year to Nevada, enough for <br />875,000 new residents.. But it <br />would only be for a limited period. <br />And with Colorado's Western <br />Slope booming and demands for <br />water increasing, it is not dear <br />that the proposal could win ap- <br />proval. <br />"Roan Creek is not a final solu- <br />tion for Nevada, but it certainly <br />can be part of the solution. And <br />we're willing to investigate that," <br />said Janet Rogers, chairwoman of <br />the Colorado River Commission of <br />Nevada. <br />Com.mission members toured <br />the site Thursday with Grand <br />Junction city and county officials. <br />Crowell said that before Nevada <br />could lease the Roan water it <br />would bave to have a illan for a <br />permanent future source. <br />Possibilities include an ex- <br />change deal with Mexico, buying <br />water from farms or tapping the <br />Virgin River. <br /> <br /> <br />I <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
