An addi-
tional bank protection project, and repairs to flood damaged sections
were accomplished by the Wbrks Progress Administratioh in 1936 and 1938,
respectively. The floodway was seriously damaged by the flood of
APril 19h2, and although it was later repaired to a. certain extent by
the city, additional damages were experienced during the spring flood of
1949, and the August 1950 flood. At the request of the city, emergency
protection at the south abutment of the Animas Street bridge was pro-
vided by the Corps of Engineers during the summer of 1950.
63. There are other minor protective works along Purgatoire River.
They consist mostly of piling, Kellner jetties, dumped riprap, and other
minor works, which were installed by various transportation companies,
the city of Trinidad, and individuals, for the protection of public and
private property and bridge approaches.
6h. Corps of En_gin~projects. - There are no existing flood
control or naVigation improvements constructed by the Corps of Engineers
on the Purgatoire River or its tributaries. However, the city of
Trinidad has applied to the Federal Government, under Section 205 of the
Flood Control Act of 19h8, for emergency protection against floods which
originate on Pinon Canon, a small tributary located northwest of Trinidad.
The only outlet from the precipitous watershed is through a highly devel-
oped commercial and residential section of the city. This project would
be completely independent of any authorized or proposed projects for
Purgatoire River, since floods on Pinon Canon cause damage before they
enter Purgatoire River.
65. Authorized flood control pro.iect - Trinidad. - As mentioned
previously under "Authority, II a channel improvement project on Purgatoire
River through Trinidad has been authorized for construction. This proj-
ect would provide flood protection for urban developments in the flood

25

, --)'

,
