.

.

.

0655

A large part of the produce is used locally as winter feed for cattle

and sheep. The distribution, yield, and value of the crops are given

in appendix C.

27. Irrigated land. ~ The irrigated acreage in the basin, most of

which is located outside the flood plain, comprises two large areas be-

tween Trinidad and the head of the canyon sedtion below; namely, the

Sunflower Valley area, and the area served by the Model Land and Irriga'"

tion Company. The ditches serving these areas are owned either privately
, .

, ,
or by operating stocl< companies. The Sunflbl.jer Valley area is served by

"

the Bacs Ditdh and diversion dam, river mile 15614, the Enlarged South

, " I
Side (Pulaski) Ditch, river mile 153.4, and other smaller ditches. The

Model Land and Irrigation CompanY maintain~ a ditch and reservoir system
which was originally designed to irrigate approx{mateir 20,000 acres of

land. The reservoir, with a present effective capacity of less than

10,000 acre-feet,.is located on the drainage area of Chicosa Creek, which

enters the Purgatoire River at about river mile 140. Water is diverted

from the Purgatoire River by the Model diversion works, comprising a low

diversion dam at river mile 151.9, and a canal which conveys the water

to the reservoir. Because of other decreed water rights, the diversion

of water to the reservoir is made mainly during the winter months and

during high flow periods at other seasons of the year. All other irri-

gated lands in the vicinity are served by direct diversions ,without the

benefit of storage, except for a few small detention reservoirs.

28. The distribution of irrigated crops is dependent to a large

degree upon the adequacy of the available water supply. Areas having

high diversion priorities are able to raise proportionately more of the

crops which yield greater returns. Irrigation is discussed in detail

in appendix D.

eDUlRAOD WATER GOMSERVHlOI BOARD
St.te Office Building
DENVER, COL.ORADO
~~{"'

10

o .
,,,,-,,' 0< '~'-<I:~'

e
