Barnett
Executive Director
Colorado River Basin Salinity
Control Forum
106 West 500 South, Suite 101
Bountiful, Utah 84010

Dear Mr. Barnett:

Enclosed for your:- use and dissemination to the Forum are 30 copies of the
final Preliminary Findings Repore, Colorado River Waeer Quality Improvement
Program, Meeker Dome Unit, Colorado, February 1984.

A.s you may be a'.-lare, planning studies to date indicate the. plugging of the
abandoned oil wells on Meeker Dome has significantly reduced sale loading
into the White River in northwestern Colorado. First year monitoring
activities instituted after the well plugging (July 1981 through June
1982) indicate that salt loading in the White River resulting from Meeker
Dome seepage has been reduced 74 percent from prep lugging levels. The
potential salinity concentration reduction at Imperial Dam from the well
plugging is conservatively esLimated at 1.6 mg/L at a cost-effectiveness
of $149,000 per mg/L. The cost-effectiveness is expected eO improve since
salt loading is continuing to decline and the 1.6 mg/L reduction is
expected to increase.

We have prepared this final Preliminary Findings Report for use as a
public document so that Forum members, the public, and interest"ed entities
may become aware of the current status on this proj~ct. It is our
intention to continue the monitoring program at Meeker Dome until October
1984. If, in face, the plugging has significantly reduced the salt
loading, a final planning report on the Heeker Dome Unit will be prepared
concluding the studies.

Sincerely yours,

.:.:....

.....:?"~)f~..~:

Cl~~ord I.
