SUMMARY SHEETS (Continued)

Basin Reservoir to a treatment plant to be constructed near the reser-
voir by the water users. The trealled water would then be conveyed to
the city's distribution system through the project Durango Municipal and
Industrial Pipeline. Supplies for rural communities in the La Plata
River drainage and for the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Tribe would be made
available from the Dry Side Canal, and supplies for the Southern Ute
Indian Tribe would be made available at Southern Ute Reservoir. In New
Mexico, municipal and indust:cial water would be diverted directly from
the Animas River except that water would be released from Ridges Basin
Rescrvoi:c into Basin Creek and the Animas River when the river flow was
insufficient for downstream demands. The water users would be respon-
sible for the conveyance, treatment, and distribut ion of their respec-
t\ve water supplies.

('
\,

Recreation facilities would be provided at Ridges Basin and Southern Ute
Re'1ervoirs. A tract of land in the vicinity of the project area would
be acquired and turned over to the Colorado Division of Wildlife to
replace land owned by the Division which would be required for Ridges
, Basin Reservoir. To compensate for wildlife habitat which would be lost
at the res"rvoir, an area of land wes t of the reservoir and a second area
west of Durango would be acquired and developed as big game habitat.
Additionally, land adjacent to Southern Ute Reservoir would be managed
for wildlife. Some existing recreation at Ridges Basin and some white-
water boating in the Animas River below Durango would be lost as a result
of the project. The Bureau is seeking Congressional authorization to
exceed existing limitations on the expenditure of nonreimbursable project
funds to mitigate and enhance cultural resources.

WATER SUPPLY
New
Colorado Mexico Total
Project supply (average acre-feet annually)
Irrigat'ion 101,300 16,800 118,100
Municipal and industrial use 41,700 38,400 80,100
Total 143,000 55,200 198,200
Effects on Colorado River (annual average)
Stream depletion (acre-feet) 120,700 34,100 154, 800
Change in salt load (tons) -14,720 8,250 -6,470
Changes in salt concentration at
Imperial Dam (mg/L)
From concentrating effects of stream
depletion 14.5 4.1 18.6
From change in salt load -1. 5 .8 -.7

2
