Proposal (#3) recommended complete declassification of the Gore Range-Eagles <br />Nest Primitive Area. Some of the testimonials for this alternative preferred to <br />retain the Primitive Area classification, now in effect. <br /> <br />The majority of respondents for Proposal #3. expressed confidence in Forest <br />Officers being able to manage the land and make decisions based on the ecologi- <br />cal characteristics of the land. its vegetation. and its wildlife. They wanted bal- <br />anced use of the entire Gore Range in accordance with the multiple use principles <br />as applied under the Multiple Use-Sustained Yield Act of June 12, 1960. <br /> <br />Seven people and two organizations submitted individually prepared state- <br />ments and two people testified at the oral hearing in favor of this Proposal. <br />Seven hundred and ninety-nine persons submitted signed. mass-mailed cards or <br />petition signatures. This amounted to eight hundred and ten responses for this <br />Proposal or 3.8% of the total. <br /> <br />Citizens Groups which generally favored Proposal #3. <br /> <br />1. Federal Timber Purchasers Association <br />2. Forest Products Treating Company <br /> <br />4. Proposal (14) contained 124,785 acres. This includes the 71,785 acres of the <br />Hearing Proposal plus the retention of four areas of adjacent National Forest <br />lands, and a small acreage of private land.
