PUBLIC RESPONSE TO THE WILDERNESS PROPOSAL

Public interest in the future of the Gore Range-Eagles Nest Primitive Area has been
high. This was evidenced by testimony, both pro and con. on the controversial Red
Buffalo Tunnel route for Interstate 70 during 1967 and 1968. It was further evidenced
in the fact that a civil lawsuit was med in Federal Court against the United States and
several officials of the Department of Agriculture for an injunction to stop the Forest
Service and Kaibab Industries from constructing any roads or harvesting any timber in
the East Meadow Creek timber sale which was awarded April 15, 1969. A preliminary
injunction was granted and has been continued indefinitely or until a "determination has
been made by the President and Congress that East Meadow Creek is predominantly
wilderness in character and should be made part of Gore Range-Eagles Nest or that it
should not be. "

The Forest Service proposed an Eagles Nest Wilderness of 71,785 acres. The Hear-
period extended August 21, 1970 to November 10, 1970. Oral Hearings were held
in both Frisco and Denver. Colorado, during early October.

Oral testimony was received October 8 and 9, 1970. in Frisco, Colorado.
