RESOURCES

Wilderness

The proposed Eagles Nest Wilderness embodies all of the characteristics of a Wilder-
ness. Evidences of man's intrusion into the area are few. There are areas of virgin
forest, cascading streams. deep clear lakes, abundant fish and wildlife. and one of the
more rugged mountain ranges in Colorado. The Gore Range, a mass of sharp-pointed
peaks, crests, and ridges, dominates the landscape and provides a resting place for the
perpetual snowbanks, which lie on almost vertical slopes.

The 87,755 acre proposed Wilderness, while not large compared to some of the other
units of the National Wilderness Preservation System, contains some of the most inacces-
sible country in Colorado for a primitive and unconfined type of recreation. It can be
crossed by trail only at its northern or southern end. In between these trails are thou-
sands of acres of spectacular mountain country available to only the most rugged and
well-disciplined wilderness traveler. The lower reaches of the proposed Wilderness are
accessible to the less hardy by forest trail and yet offer the solitude and comfort of a
land essentially undisturbed by man except for his occasional visits.

Its streams and lakes are a haven for trout. The sighting of mountain sheep. moun-
tain goat. elk, deer, bear, and numerous small mammals and birds is a welcome diver-
sion to the viewer as he travels through superb scenery. Occasionally, the stately golden
eagle can be seen wheeling around Eagles Nest Mountain. The forests are untouched
by modern man.

Opportunities for scientific study and informal outdoor education are present through-
out the area. Chances for an experience in initiative, judgment. self-reliance, and sur-
vival exist here. Some 58,650 acres of the proposal have been managed for wilderness
purposes in a National Forest Primitive Area since 1933.

Recreation

Numerous outdoor recreation activities are available within the proposed Wilderness.
Opportunities exist for camping. hildng, mountain climbing. riding, back-packing, nature
study. and the enjoyment of unique or unusual environment. Thirty-five lakes and 25
miles of stream provide fishing. Elk, deer, bear, mountain sheep, and mountain goat
populations will provide hunting opportunities. About 108 miles of trail are available for
access to recreation opportunities; however, most of the higher elevations in the interior
are trailless for the more adventuresome traveler. Three commercial packers and out-
fitters served the Primitive Area in 1970.

1351

7
