DENVER COLORADO
RELEASE D1\TE..... ~ '
ADVANCE FOR RELEASE ON
MAY 30, 1974, 3:00 P.M.

NATIONAL FOREST WILDERNESS IN COLORADO RECOGNIZED

Governor John Vanderhoof proclaimed the week beginning June 2, 1974 as "National Forest

Wilderness Appreciation Week in Colorado" at ceremonies in the State Capitol on May 30.

Regional Forester william Lucas accepted the Governor's Proclamation which "commended the

Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, for pioneering the Wilderness concept as

part of a balanced pattern of National Forest land management."

Lucas presented the Governor with a photograph of Trappers Lake, adjacent to the Flat

Tops Primitive Area on the White River National Forest, "where the Wilderness concept was

first applied by the Forest Service." Lucas noted that although the first Primitive Area

was not formally established until 1924 - on the Gila National Forest in New Mexico - it

was at Trappers Lake in Colorado in 1919 when the Forest Service, at the urging of "Recrea-

tion Engineer" Arthur Carhart, dropped plans for a road around Trappers Lake. Instead, a

policy of managing the area in an undeveloped condition was developed.

A facsimile of a State Historical Society of Colorado marker, commemorating the 1919

Trappers Lake decision, was also given to Lucas by Governor Vanderhoof on behalf of the

Society. The Historical Society and the Forest Service will jointly place the marker this

summer near the lake in recognition of the historic event.

As part of the Golden Anniversary celebration of Wilderness, dating from the 1924 es-

tablishment of the Gila Primitive Area, Governor of Wyoming Stanley K. Hathaway and Gover-

nor of Nebraska J. James Exon, are issuing proclamations on Wilderness appreciation.

They are urging the citizens of their states to continue their involvement in the many

land use decisions affecting the public and private lands of the nation.

- END -
