<br />000698 <br /> <br />The eleven National Forests in Colorado, containing almost 14,000,000 acres of federally <br />owned lands, now include five Wilderness and six Primitive Areas totaling over 812,000 <br />acres. Those areas designated as "Wi Iderness" now have the legal status provided by the <br />Wilderness Preservation Act of 1964. The Primitive Areas, which are similarly managed by <br />the Forest Service, remain as administrative units established under Secretary of Agriculture <br />Regulations. At this time they are under consideration for addition to the statutory <br />National Wilderness Preservation System by Congress. <br />
